Organic Chemistry

My research is centred around the total synthesis of natural products and in particular metabolites derived from sponges. Marine sponges are sessile animals, hence they produce a wide variety of different chemicals as defence against predators. The majority of these compounds are found to be active against human pathogens e.g. cancer cells. Unfortunately most of these compounds are often produced in small quantities and it is not practical (and non-ecological) to harvest them from sponges. Total synthesis becomes a viable option to gain access to these compounds. In our group students will be exposed to different kinds of C-C bond forming reactions and we believe that total synthesis is an excellent training ground for students.
