Development and regeneration of the olfactory (sense of smell) system Repair of the injured spinal cord Development of growth factor therapies for neural repair Natural product discovery for neural repair therapies Live cell imaging to determine mechanisms of glia-neuron interactions

Our group is led by Dr James St John and Dr Jenny Ekberg and is funded by grants from the Australian Research Council and the Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation. Our research aims to develop therapies to repair the injured and diseased brain. We focus on three areas: (1) developing therapies to repair the spinal cord, (2) developing therapies to regenerate the olfactory nerve, and (3) determining the mechanisms by which bacteria penetrate the brain via the olfactory and trigeminal nerves. We combine developmental biology, natural product drug discovery, microfluidic engineering, enhanced 3D cell culturing and live cell imaging to develop and test new therapies. With our extensive experience in the development and regeneration of the olfactory system and in glia-neuron biology in general, we provide a unique approach to repairing brain.
