Professor Marc in het Panhuis’s career path includes international experience in academic and industry appointments in the Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom and U.S.A., and since 2006 at the University of Wollongong in Australia. His academic experience at Wollongong includes a traditional teaching and research academic role in the School of Chemistry (2006-2009), and an Australia Research Council Future Fellowship (2009-2013). In 2013 he took up the position of Associate Dean (International) for the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health, while continuing his research activities in developing materials for water treatment, soft robotics, bionics and tissue engineering applications. Professor in het Panhuis is passionate about engaging with the community with regards to teaching and learning and research activities. He has been committed to these activities for almost 20 years, starting with community engagement through Science Fairs during his PhD studies. Since moving to Australia, Professor in het Panhuis has engaged in regular visits to primary and high school students, and formal partnerships through CSIRO’s Scientist in School Program.

Professor in het Panhuis’s vision is to establish Wollongong as: (i) a leading academic institution for research in hydrogels materials and their processing using Additive Manufacturing (3D/4D printing); and (ii) a reputable international education provider with strong links to international high-ranking institutions. His main research focus is to combine bio and synthetic polymers with carbon nanostructures, and/or conducting polymers via processing techniques such as additive fabrication into soft (wet and tough) materials for water treatment, soft robotics, bionics and tissue engineering applications. Since moving to the University of Wollongong in 2006, Professor in het Panhuis has focussed his research on hydrogels (based on biopolymers such as gellan gum), their mechanical and electrical characterisation, and processing using Additive Manufacturing (3D/4D printing). Understanding the characteristics of materials and their importance in processing and materials fabrication has enabled his group to make a number of breakthroughs in: (i) the processing of conducting materials (including printing of devices), (ii) the synthesis of a new type of tough hydrogel (including 3D printing), and (iii) the development of bio-inks for printing living cells. These works received significant media attention. His ‘Hydrogel Scaffolds’ invention won the People’s Choice award on ABC TV’s The New Inventors in 2009. Since 2006, Professor in het Panhuis has supervised 19 PhD, six MSc, 17 Honours and eight visiting research students.
