Shaokoon's expertise is in the area of mechanics of materials which includes characterising and modeling the mechanical response of complex materials. Over the years, he has extended his research into other research fields such as biomechanics, heat and mass transfer in biological systems, microfludics, MR imaging sequences and computational models (Finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics). Shaokoon has written more than 70 publications which include peer-reviewed journal articles, invited book chapters and conference proceedings. He has also recieved invitations to chair major symposiums in several prestigious international conferences and was invited as a speaker in the World Congress of Biomechanics in 2010 and 2014. To date, Shaokoon's research has attracted several national merit-based research grant fundings (NHMRC and ARC).

The PARTICLE research group is co-founded by Dr Agi Kourmatzis and Dr Shaokoon Cheng. Our research aims to understand particle mechanics and specific factors that influence their transport in the environment including the human respiratory pathways. The role of particle mechanics in industry is increasing in recent years and is linked very closely to human health. We believe that particle mechanics as a research field is emerging and will evolve to become a critical area of research with wide implications in industries such as inhaler-based medication for respiratory disease, virus and germ transmission in space, pesticide spraying, pollutant formation and surface coating. Our work in this area also includes the development of novel medical devices to improve the clinical assessment of the respiratory pathways in health and disease.
