个人简介
Dr Thy Truong completed her PhD (Analytical and Environmental Chemistry, 2001) at RMIT University focusing on lipid biomarkers to distinguish sources of faecal pollution in contaminated waters and sediments around popular tourist hotspots in the East Gippsland Lakes, Victoria. She also developed new optimised analytical techniques for analysing and quantifying lipid markers using multidimensional GCxGC with cryogenic trapping and GC-MS. She undertook a postdoctoral research associate position (substituting for a Senior Research Scientist as the head of the research project and the organic chemistry laboratory) at the Stroud Water Research Center in Pennsylvania investigating the use of molecular tracers for monitoring sources of contamination in streams and rivers associated with the New York City drinking water system (Safe Drinking Water Act grant funded by the U.S. EPA and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation). In 2003 she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at RMIT University to derive a holistic approach to managing dairy processor waste streams before working as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Melbourne investigating the environmental inorganic chemistry of phosphorus and arsenic in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems using flow injection analysis with membrane separation and spectrophotometric or chemiluminescence detection. She then decided to gain experience in commercial FDA/NATA accredited chemical testing laboratories as an analytical chemist at Cardinal Health (pharmaceuticals), and OMIC Australia (food). Her position at CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering (April 2008 - July 2010) as an Environmental Analytical Chemist and Deputy Laboratory Manager in the Environmental Analysis Group (EAG) reignited her interests in research and method development/validation in analytical chemistry, separation science and mass spectrometry, which in turn has led her to her current appointment as RSB Mass Spectrometry Officer (February 2011 - present).
研究领域
My research, sample extraction / instrumental method development and method validation interests have always revolved around organic mass spectrometry and the associated chromatographic techniques of liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. Examples of the organic mass spectrometry research projects that I have been actively involved in have included identifying and/or quantifying (bio)molecular tracers such as:-
Current MSF projects:
Plant hormones (jasmonates, SA, ABA, auxins), pigmients, primary (cellulose and non-cellulose) and other secondary metabolites (flavonoids, saffron derivatives) to determine biosynthetic pathways and their functions, as well as associating their possible (health) benefits to humans.
Non-targeted metabolites in plants, tonsil and cancerous tissue cells, or plasma of rats or humans, and E. coli.
Other targeted biological metabolites such as short chain fatty acids, sterols and FAMES in faecal matter, plants, and fungi.
Intact proteins (direct infusion), peptides and/or tryptic peptides (including ITRAQ and MASCOT) in plants and fungi, and human or rat plasma and serum.
Dichloroacetic acid for cancer treatment.
Past employment projects:
Sterols in plants, green lip mussels and cow faeces to distinguish specific biomarkers.
Faecal steroids and bile acids to identify contaminant sources to assess water quality of the East Gippsland Lakes, Victoria.
Faecal steroids, caffeine, fragrances and PAHs to identify contaminant sources such as sewage effluent and agricultural and urban runoffs in order to assess water quality in watersheds providing source water for drinking and recreation to the people of New York City.
Pesticide residues in grains, fruits and vegetables.
Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from textile materials to determine indoor air quality.
Fatty acid methyl esters in facial tumours of the Tasmanian Devils (CSIRO side project).
Pesticide residues in Australian wool to support Australian wool’s environmentally friendly clean green image.
"CSI" investigation to determine presence of hydrocarbons on burnt fire uniforms.
Such collaborative research and method development/validation projects have allowed me to enhance my skills and experience in the (extensive hands-on) use and understanding of a wide range of analytical techniques, including MDGC, GCxGC, GC (FID, ECD, NPD), LC (UV-Vis, PDA, Fluorescence), MS (ion trap, quadrupole, ESI QTOF with Jetstream or Chipcube), spectroscopy (AAS, UV-Vis, FTIR), sampling and sub-sampling, and sample preparation that include various extraction and purification/clean-up methods (solvent extraction, solid phase extraction, accelerated solvent extraction, automated thermal desorption, supercritical fluid extraction, solid phase microextraction) as well as derivatisation techniques.
