Dr Nicole Yu is a Research Fellow in the MechBio Lab at the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering. Her research interests lie at the interface of tissue engineering and mechanobiology, focusing on the regenerative power of the periosteum. The periosteum is a 'smart' membrane enveloping the bone that also provides a niche for regenerative stem cells, such as periosteum-derived stem cells. Nicole is developing experimental models to understand how our body's intrinsic mechanical cues can drive tissue genesis. These new insights will facilitate the design of next generation implants, which stimulate bone tissue genesis through delivery of stem cells and biological factors. Nicole has a strong multidisciplinary foundation in bone tissue engineering and pre-clinical testing of drug-eluting biomaterials for bone healing.
