Hearing loss is a hidden sensory deficit affecting 1 in 6 Australians, the statistics is alarmingly global. My research aim to discover the role of membrane receptor-mediated cellular signal transduction in hearing. Research techniques include in vivo small animal auditory testing, multi-photon confocal microscopy for immunofluorescence real-time and histological imaging, electrophysiology, and pharmacological treatments. By uncovering the role of receptor signalling pathways in healthy and hearing-loss ears of transgenic mouse models, we gain knowledge on how noise, aging, and drugs affect hearing function. Our ultimate goal is to provide avenues for preventing and restoring hearing to affected individuals.
