Nalini Pather is a lecturer in the School of Medical Sciences. Her research is currently focussed on two areas: tissue repair and medical education.
TISSUE REPAIR: This is particularly focussed on the relation between the processes of angiogenesis and tissue repair following muscle degeneration. There is strong evidence that the processes of angiogenesis and muscle regeneration share common cytokines and chemokines, and that these cytokines and chemokines are able to activate resident stem cell populations, causing them to migrate to and proliferate in the injured muscle bed where they are integral to the regenerating damaged tissue. More recent evidence suggests that the injured muscle secretes ‘myokines’ that direct these processes. Nalini's research group is focussing on elucidating the role of angiogenic cytokines and chemokines in orchestrating the repair of muscle following injury and in activating resident stem cell populations. An understanding of these mechanisms has potential for optimising and increasing the efficacy of stem cell and cytokine therapies for congenital diseases such as muscular dystrophies. In the long term, this data should aid in developing effective cytokine therapies for acute muscle injury (such as from trauma) and degenerative muscular diseases. This research presently focuses on muscle tissue and in future, will be expanded to include other solid organs, applying the principles and knowledge gained from muscle as a solid organ.
MEDICAL EDUCATION: In the area of medical education, Nalini is particularly interested in student learning and assessment in the medical sciences. She is currently developing Adaptive eLearning tutorials in Anatomy to be used as a formative assessment tool. Adaptive eLearning tutorials provide a platform for formative assessment of students providing immediate feedback and opportunity to remediate gaps in knowledge. At an educator level, it has the potential to identify areas of troublesome knowledge for a cohort of students, and to evaluate student learning. Nalini is also investigating personality traits and learning styles and how these influence assessment performance in various modes of assessment. This research is aimed at developing sustainable and robust assessment methods for medicine and science students.
