Professor Brett Garner is a Principal Research Fellow with Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) and conjoint Professor with the School of Medical Sciences, UNSW.
Professor Garner's research is focused on lipoprotein metabolism, apolipoprotein structure and cellular lipid metabolism with the aim of elucidating mechanisms that regulate lipid transport. Studies on apolipoprotein-E, apolipoprotein-D and ATP-binding cassette transporters indicate new roles in cell biology, atherosclerosis and neurodegeneration. Studies on the interaction of cellular cholesterol and glycosphingolipid metabolism provide new mechanistic understandings to the dysregulation of lipid transport in atherosclerosis and specific neurodegenerative diseases. These studies have also yielded new potential therapeutic avenues to regulate cellular lipid metabolism.
