The origns of chronic back pain are often multifactorial and include physical and psychosocial factors. For chronic low back pain an evidence based treatment approach includes shifting the focus to improving function and managing and coping better with persisting pain. This approach utilises modalities, including exercise and cognitive behavioural interventions, to improve physical and psychosocial status. However, there is considerable conjecture concerning the efficacy of various exercise modalites for the treatment of chronic low back pain. Research examining exercise and chronic low back pain has positive implications for evidence based treatment.
