Dr Marquis trained as a biochemical engineer and has a long track record of collaborative research. This record, in part, enabled the securing of funding through the NCRIS and SLF schemes ($1.91M) to provide a research infrastructure node in recombinant protein production for the Australian research community – the UNSW Recombinant Products Facility. In addition to running contract projects, research in the facility includes a number of internal initiatives to investigate and optimise bioprocesses. Dr Marquis is involved in a range of collaborative research projects in the areas of protein biotechnology, and in the bio-nanotechnology interface. Over recent years, he has collaborated with Professor Sam Breit of the Centre for Applied Medical Research at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. This has involved generating a process to improve production of recombinant MIC-1. Another long-running successful collaboration with Professor Rose Amal in the UNSW School of Chemical Engineering has led to the development of projects in two broad areas of nanobiotechnology: evaluation of the toxicity nanoparticulate catalysts; and evaluation of the application of nanoparticles in biotechnology. Other collaborations include those with A/Professor Michael Manefield in developing recombinant enzymes for organohalide bioremediation and with A/Professor Pall Thordarson in protein expression for the development of novel protein polymer composites and biosensors. Dr Marquis is an invited reviewer for a number of journals, including ACS Nano, Small, Particle and Particle Systems Characterization, The Biochemical Engineering Journal, The Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, Cytotechnology (Associate Editor) and Chemical Engineering Science. He is a member of the NSW committee for Ausbiotech.
