个人简介

Dennis began his professional life as an engineer and a high school science teacher. He then obtained a PhD in Biochemical Engineering from the University of Sydney, specialising in biological nutrient removal from waste water and air. His academic career has been diverse with three years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Australian National University studying molecular plant physiology and two years as a lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Sydney. In 2003, he began his current romance with forensic science as a postdoctoral fellow in the Australian Federal Police Forensic Services laboratory in Canberra. He took up a position as Assistant Professor of Forensic Studies at the University of Canberra in 2007. Dennis' research is broadly focussed on forensic genetics. That is, the use of genetics to enhance the value of DNA as forensic evidence. This includes the extraction of DNA from difficult substrates (bone, hair, degraded tissue), discrimination between different species based on their DNA, the prediction of phenotype from genotype and differentiation of human populations according to their biogeographical ancestry. He is also broadly interested in the use of so called next generation sequencing for forensic purposes. Dennis has delivered forensic biology training courses, on behalf of the Australian Federal Police, for members of the Indonesian National Police, the Royal Thai Police, the Iraqi Police Services and Pakistan Forensic Science Agencies.
