My research is concerned with the organometallic chemistry of molybdenum and tungsten in complexes with the hydrocarbon ring systems cycloheptatrienyl, cycloheptadienyl and cyclooctadienyl. There are three areas of focus to the work: 1. The redox chemistry of carbon chain systems based on acetylide ligands eg M-C≡CR, M-C≡C-C≡CR and M-C≡C-C≡C-M where M is a supporting metal group containing molybdenum or tungsten. We are interested in the structral changes which occur in the carbon chain as the oxidation state of M is varied and also the degree of electronic communication between metal centres along an unsaturated carbon chain as a model for a molecular wire. For our recent work in this area see Journal of Organometallic Chemistry, 2006, Volume 691, page 3617. 2. Alkyne transformations promoted by the cycloheptatrienylmolybdenum centre leading to novel carbene, vinylidene and allenylidene complexes. 3. Hapticity interconversion processes in dienyl and trienyl ligands co-ordinated to molybdenum and tungsten. The objective of this work is further to explore and understand aspects of the "indenyl effect" in a series of related dienyl systems.
