Biomaterials and biomedical engineering

Our research is multidisciplinary and focuses on the molecular design and fabrication of biomimetic materials for use in medical device applications. Depending on interests and expertise, group members are involved in a wide variety of research endeavors including: •synthesis of molecular, polymer, and extended framework biomaterials containing therapeutic functional groups •analytical and physical studies of biomaterials utilizing fluorescence, chemiluminesence, zeta potential, and LC/MS-TOF •fabrication and engineering of materials including spin-coating substrates and electrospinning nanofibers for tissue engineering •in vitro and in vivo efficacy and toxicity studies of biomaterials with potential translation to medical applications (preclinical studies done in collaboration with CSU Veterinary Medicine, UM Medical School, and Beaumont Research Hospital) The group includes graduate and undergraduate students from the Department of Chemistry, Department of Biology, Department of Biomedical Sciences, and the School of Biomedical Engineering. Chemistry graduate students represent all divisions in the department including analytical, organic, inorganic, physical, and materials.
