A fundamental challenge of organic chemistry continues to be the elucidation of the relationship between structure and energy. That task can take many forms ranging from theoretical work, to mechanistic studies, to the synthesis of new molecules possessing unusual properties and the measurement of those properties. On the theoretical side, Dr. Wilcox continued to develop graph theory as a practical tool for property prediction. This resulted in simple, nonempirical, algebraic expressions for the total p-electron energy of conjugated systems of all types. Graph theory has also proven useful in understanding advanced semi empirical quantum mechanical models by distinguishing between those aspects related to the connectivity of the atoms and those concerned with other factors. These studies have predicted the existence of molecules having simultaneous aromatic, olefinic, and antiaromatic properties. His group synthesized several examples of these hydrocarbons, including one predicted to have benzene rings with no ring currents. This extraordinary result was verified experimentally.More recently, Professor Wilcox has developed improved models to describe the rates of condensation of supersaturated gases.
