Dr. Lyon’s group works on a wide range of systems around the common theme of soft polymeric architectures. Research efforts at the fundamental level are aimed at understanding the role of “softness” in the physical properties of colloidal hydrogel assemblies. Related work is focused on the development of methods for probing the viscoelastic behavior of individual hydrogel particles and thin films assembled from them. More applied efforts have grown out of these fundamental pursuits, including the development of thin hydrogel films that resist mammalian cell attachment or bacterial biofilm formation, thin films that act as depots for the triggered delivery of therapeutics, and colloidal assemblies for the controlled encapsulation and delivery of proteins. Finally, the group interfaces directly with collaborators in engineering and clinical disciplines in the development of new biomaterials that resist thrombosis, assemblies designed to control blood clotting, and nanoparticles for targeted chemotherapy.
