The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has recently published recommendations on using antibiotics to prevent eye infections with gonorrhea (gonococcal eye infection) in newborns.
Gonococcal eye infection refers to infection of the eye caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a sexually transmitted infection. Newborns typically become infected during delivery when maternal cervical infection is present. Infection starts in the outer part of the eye (conjunctivitis) but can spread to the cornea and cause permanent vision damage. Although now rare, newborn gonococcal conjunctivitis was once a major cause of blindness in the United States.
The decrease in prevalence of gonococcal eye infection in newborns in developed countries is due to routine screening of mothers for gonorrhea combined with routine preventive treatment (prophylaxis) with antibiotics for newborns. The current most commonly used antibiotic for prevention is erythromycin ophthalmic ointment.
