Poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative was ladderized in a stepwise manner by the intramolecular oxidative cyclization using 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-para-benzoquinone and Brønsted acids, in which the careful choice of acid was crucial for obtaining soluble ladder polymer in high yield. GPC elution time became shorter and UV–vis absorption/fluorescence emission spectra exhibited peak shifts with the progress of carbon-carbon bond formation. The ladder formation efficiency was not quantitative; however, our proof-of-concept experiment opens the door for developing novel CLPs.
