Abstract Carbon dot powders without combining with any nanostructures or nanomaterials exhibit broadband light-absorption ability and they are proved to possess excellent photoreduction performance. Not only do they exhibit highly efficient reduction of quinones under an atmosphere of air and visible light irradiation, but they can be also used repeatedly without incurring obvious changes in photocatalytic activities. Our experimental evidences indicate that photoinduced electron transfer properties of carbon dots endow photoreducing capacities of their powders.
