Symmetrically and unsymmetrically 6,12-disubstituted 5,11-dihydroindolo[3,2-b]carbazoles have been synthesized via a range of methods: a) double Fischer indolization of the bis-phenylhydrazone of 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-cyclohexanedione, b) condensation of indole with aliphatic aldehydes, and c) Pd-mediated cyclization of a diphenyl phenylenediamine derivative. Most notably, 5,11-dihydroindolo[3,2-b]carbazole-6,12-dicarbaldehyde has been synthesized, whereby a previously assigned structure has been confirmed. This compound is an extremely efficient ligand for the TCDD (Ah) receptor.
