Which articles published in the JAMA Network of journals resonated with readers the most this year—and why? Those are the questions we set out to answer in our first-ever end-of-year roundup. We did an accounting of all Original Investigations and Special Communications published in our journals between September 1, 2016, and August 31, 2017, and ranked them based on online views. Then we interviewed the journal editors to find out why these articles in particular proved so popular with physicians and, in many cases, the public. Herein we present the top-viewed articles from each of the 12 journals in the JAMA family in order of rank across the network. From an expose on a sugar industry cover-up and an evaluation of brain trauma in football players to the hazards of personal grooming and the prevalence of tinnitus, there’s something for everyone on this list.
