Origin matters: Iron and nitrogen-containing carbon (Fe/N/C) catalysts were prepared by pyrolysis of a mixture of carbon support and π-expanded Fe(Salen) precursors. The ligand frameworks of the precursors remarkably affect the content of pyridinic N and structure of atomically-dispersed Fe active sites in the Fe/N/C catalysts, and the atomically-dispersed Fe active sites with a high content of pyridinic N promote the efficient four-electron reduction of dioxygen.
