A contribution to the Al–Cu–Cr phase diagram

The Al–Cu–Cr alloy system was studied above 30 at.% Al by scanning electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. Partial isothermal sections at 570, 600, 650, 700, 745 and 800 °C are presented. The Al–Cr γ1-phase was found to propagate up to 18 at.% Cu. The compositions of the earlier reported ternary phases ζ, κ, ψ and Λ were specified. The total ζ-phase range extends between ∼ Al82Cu3Cr15, Al75Cu4Cr21, Al79.5Cu7.5Cr13 and Al69Cu11Cr20, that of the κ-phase between ∼ Al65Cu15Cr20, Al60Cu29.5Cr10.5 and Al57.5Cu26.5Cr16. The ψ-phase was found to be formed in a small compositional region around ∼ Al65Cu24.5Cr10.5 at 700 and 745 °C but not already at 650 °C. At 700 °C the S-phase and the σ-phase were found to be formed in small compositional regions around ∼ Al70Cu19Cr11 and ∼Al60Cu29.5Cr10.5, respectively. At 650 °C the ϕ-phase (P63, a = 1.0985, c = 1.2673 nm) is formed in a small compositional region around ∼ Al70Cu19Cr11 associated at 700 °C with the S-phase, while the S-phase region shifts towards higher Al. At 650 °C the Λ-phase is formed in a small compositional region around ∼ Al61Cu35.5Cr3.5.
