The Smiles rearrangement has been revived in the recent literature as a method of preparing diverse sets of molecules containing aryl functionality. Recent progress in heteroatom arylation, in particular, has been a key enabling step for this chemistry, as O, N and S-arylation can now be reliably achieved to set-up aryl transfer through Smiles processes. In their Minireview on page 8992 ff., C. M. Holden and M. F. Greaney discuss recent advances in Smiles chemistry.
