Numerous superstructures have been proposed for vaterite in the literature, on the basis of complex but incomplete experimental data or from ab initio modeling. The various ordering and distortive mechanisms that give rise to these structures are critically reviewed. The most likely true superstructures of vaterite are identified, while others are shown to be less likely or even impossible.
