A facile and universal coating Orn-Val-OH for enhancing surface biocompatibility of biomedical material

The facile and rapid preparation of biocompatibility surface for biomedical materials has always been a goal in biomedical field. Catechol and its derivatives exhibit excellent adhesive properties, and alternating copolymers of basic amino acids such as poly(ornithine-valine) (Orn-Val) demonstrate superior biocompatibility and selectivity. Therefore, in this work, we employed the Ugi 4-component condensation (Ugi’ 4CC) method to introduce the catechol moieties into Orn-Val backbone, synthesizing the Orn-Val-OH with excellent adhesion properties and biocompatibility. We found that Orn-Val-OH can facilely and rapidly form the coatings on a variety of substrate surfaces, including titanium, glass, PDMS, and silicon wafers. Additionally, the concentration of Orn-Val-OH significantly influenced the hydrophilicity, protein adhesion, and the adhesion of red blood cells and platelets on silicon surface, while maintaining consistently excellent biocompatibility. These results demonstrate that Orn-Val-OH serves as a readily graftable, versatile biocompatible coating capable of enhancing the surface properties of biomedical materials.
