Spatial variations in vulnerability to energy poverty require local-specific actions in terms of customized policies and strategies. Understanding the components of vulnerability to energy poverty is important for developing effective strategies to alleviate the issue. This study aims to reveal the spatial distribution of total vulnerability to energy poverty at the provincial level in Türkiye, identifying and categorizing vulnerability components from a set of variables. The main study concerns are determining decisive factors, comprehending spatial variations, classifying relevant variables into components, and assessing the contributions of each variable and province to vulnerability. The research identifies 15 relevant vulnerability factors that influence energy poverty in Türkiye and the vulnerability levels these factors place on provinces, data was collected and analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA). Among all variables, central heating, internet access, household disposable income, and natural gas access reduce energy vulnerability, while age risk group, lone parent, unemployment, full-time students, shared property, large household size, private renting, energy-inefficient property, climatic exposure, refugees and migration factors increase it. The sum of these factors represents the total energy vulnerability of the provinces. Southeast Anatolia and coastal provinces in the west and south close to the Mediterranean and Aegean seas are most vulnerable to energy poverty. In contrast, the Central Anatolia, the Aegean, the Northern, and the Marmara are more resilient to it. Moreover, these variables are classified into 4 primary components, socio-economic status and technology, residency status, heating and energy, climate and living conditions, each influencing energy poverty.
