Improving sleep comfort by using a thermoregulation mat with a floor heating system

In this study, the effects of stepwise adjustments to thermoregulation mat temperatures, combined with underfloor heating, were evaluated to improve sleep quality in 20 healthy young adults, both male and female. Sleep quality was subjectively assessed through morning questionnaires and objectively measured using a wristband that continuously monitored sleep throughout the night. Additionally, skin temperature was measured. The combination of the underfloor heating set at 21 °C and a thermoregulation mat set at 30 °C provided the highest sleep quality, showing improvements in sleep efficiency, wake after sleep onset (WASO), and sleep onset latency (SOL) compared to other conditions. Excessive mat surface temperatures led to overheating, which negatively impacted WASO and SOL, disrupting sleep continuity. Furthermore, conditions with only underfloor heating did not sufficiently raise skin temperature, resulting in lower sleep efficiency. The findings indicate that combining underfloor heating with a thermoregulation mat, while carefully setting the mat to an appropriate temperature, is effective in supporting comfortable sleep environment and enhancing sleep quality.
