Experimental and numerical simulation study on quantitative assessment of LNAPL migration behavior in porous media

Qualitative analysis of the factors affecting the transport properties of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) and prediction of the extent of contamination are significant for identifying source areas and developing treatment strategies. This paper investigates the effects of initial leakage rate, media particle size and heterogeneity on the migration distribution of LNAPL using two-dimensional visualization experiments as well as numerical simulations of T2VOC. Image analysis, spatial moments and kinetic analysis are used to quantify the migration behavior of LNAPL. The results indicated that the migration distance and contaminated area of LNAPL in porous media were affected by leakage conditions and media structure. Meanwhile, the prediction equations for the migration behavior of large-scale LNAPL leakage in real sites are modified based on the experimental results by combining the numerical simulations at different scales. It is obtained that the equations suitable for predicting the leakage behavior of LNAPL in a real environment.
