Urban transformation has spurred the development of temporary buildings (TBs), while factors such as pandemics, disasters, and technological innovations have created new demand. TBs play a crucial role in social development by fulfilling various functions including exhibitions, sporting events, offices, and housing. At the same time, in the context of promoting low-carbon and energy-efficient architecture, it is crucial for TBs to evolve to meet the standards of sustainable development. However, research on the sustainability of TBs is still at an early stage and lacks a systematic and comprehensive theoretical framework. To fill the research gap, this review paper first describes the definitions, characteristics and classifications of TBs, followed by an analysis of its sustainability from environmental, social and economic perspectives. This review highlights the urgent need to strengthen the economic perspective in sustainability research while addressing key challenges such as conceptual ambiguities, data limitations and the limitations of assessment methodologies. To advance sustainable development, future research should establish an integrated assessment framework that includes environmental, social, and economic dimensions. In addition, studying the thermal performance of buildings in different climates, assessing resource consumption and environmental impacts throughout the building’s life cycle, promoting circular economy principles and advocating material reuse and recycling are essential steps towards developing low-carbon, comfortable, inclusive, and recyclable TBs. This review can provide architects and researchers with a comprehensive understanding of sustainability in TBs, shed light on the challenges involved, and serve as a valuable reference for future green design efforts.
