A critical review on cold-bonded artificial aggregate developed from solid wastes: From granulation analysis to performance evaluation

The shortage of natural construction aggregates, coupled with the large volumes of industrial solid wastes, is posing a significant challenge to sustainable development, thereby driving the advancement of artificial lightweight aggregates, particularly cold-bonded artificial aggregates (CBAA). On the one hand, CBAA receives increasing attentions in recent years due to its advantages in wastes recycling, low carbon emission, simple preparation process, and good performance. On the other hands, researches also indicated that the preparation and performance of CBAA varied greatly. In order to optimize the preparation process and attain a good quality of the CBAA, this article provides a state-of-the-art review on the preparation and performance of CBAA with influencing factors of raw materials, fabricating parameters and curing methods. In addition, this article also evaluates the physical properties, mechanical properties, functional properties, durability properties, and environmental attributes of CBAA, which helps confirm the feasibility and advantages on the application of CBAAs as traditional aggregates substitution in construction. This review helps to understand the application of CBAA in construction through front-end granulation analysis to post-performance evaluation, and lays the foundation for promoting the sustainable development of the construction industry.
