China's aging population is increasing because of longer life expectancy and declining fertility rates. This demographic shift has increased the demand for eldercare facilities in China, making high-quality and efficient facility management (FM) a top priority for nursing home facility managers. Building information modelling (BIM) has been proposed as an effective means of improving work efficiency during nursing home operations and maintenance. This study explored the current strategies and approaches for integrating BIM and FM into nursing homes to support the systematisation and intellectualisation of workflows during operations and maintenance. To achieve this goal, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) scheme was used for systematic evaluation. This systematic review searched scientific databases of related disciplines (e.g. Scopus, Web of Science, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure [CNKI]) from January 2010 to March 2023, supplemented by manual retrieval methods. Among the 694 articles, 63 were analysed from four perspectives: 1) FM problems faced by nursing homes, 2) the benefit of using BIM in FM , 3) the potential of BIM applications to support nursing home FM , and 4) future research directions. This study addresses the research gap in the connection between BIM and FM in nursing homes through a comprehensive literature review and examines the challenges and benefits of BIM in nursing home operations. Additionally, this research contributes to the advancement of BIM applications in nursing home operations and maintenance, offering practical insights for industry decision-makers to meet the escalating demands of an aging society.
