Green extraction of valuable compounds from the byproduct of oil extraction from forage radish seed

This work aimed to investigate the extraction of compounds from the byproduct of oil extraction (BOE) of forage radish seeds, using hydroethanolic solvent under pressurized liquid conditions. For this purpose, the influence of the variables temperature (100, 125 and 150 °C), pressure (50, 75 and 100 bar) and time (30 and 60 min) on the extraction process was evaluated. The chemical characterization, antibacterial activity, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the extracts was determined, as well as its purification. Temperature was the variable that most influenced the responses, resulting in greater overall yield (in terms of mass and active compounds) as it increased. A diverse phenolic profile was found in the extracts, encompassing different classes such as phenolic acids, flavonoids and aldehydes. The predominant compounds were sinapic, malic, nicotinic acids and rutin. The extract showed better antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus pyogenes with MIC value of 11.71 mg mL−1. The concentrations of extracts evaluated were not cytotoxic or genotoxic to tissue with high cell proliferation. After purification with XAD 7HP resin, the content of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant capacity had a pronounced increase in the obtained product.
