A new photocatalytic strategy for Ritter-type amination of alkylarenes with nitriles is reported, in which the alkylarene is first brominated by CBr3COOH under Ce(III) catalysis and blue light irradiation, and the resulting bromide then undergoes the normal Ritter reaction to afford the amide product.
