Agricultural carbon emissions constitute a significant share of global carbon emissions, emphasizing the critical need to enhance agricultural carbon emission efficiency (ACEE) as a key response to the global climate crisis. Rapid urban expansion (UE) has reshaped agricultural production practices and inevitably affects agricultural carbon emissions. However, existing research has inadequately examined the connection between UE and ACEE. This study empirically analyzes the impact of UE on ACEE and the moderating effect of land property rights stability (LPRS) using panel data from 260 cities in China spanning the years 2012–2021. The results reveal a nonlinear, inverted U-shaped relationship between UE and ACEE. This result remains robust after considering endogeneity issues, spatial spillover effects, and a series of robustness checks. The analysis of heterogeneity reveals that the negative influence of UE on ACEE becomes apparent at later stages in regions characterized by elevated levels of economic development and farmer income. Conversely, there is no notable heterogeneity observed regarding the variations in government environmental regulation intensity. Furthermore, the study highlights the positive role of LPRS. The research results provide theoretical and empirical evidence for promoting rational UE and improving ACEE.
