A straightforward metal and photocatalyst-free iodine-dependent green protocol of chalcogenation of 4-phenyl aminocoumarin/4-phenylamino-2-pyrone, as well as abnormal dual selenylation of N- substituted-4-phenyl aminocoumarin, has been developed at room temperature and ambient air in green solvent PEG-400.
