The electron count affects the shape of Bi6q− units, from a regular prism in Bi62− (left) to a regular crown-type cycle in Bi66− (right). Such units were previously isolated in the coordination sphere of metal complexes, while the (less symmetric) intermediate with a −4 charge has only been predicted by theory. In their Research Article (e202417234), Florian Weigend, Stefanie Dehnen et al. isolated the Zintl cluster [Bi6{Zn(hmds)}2]2− (center), in which two 12-electron fragments are perfectly suited to stabilize the boat-type Bi64− unit, as confirmed by DFT calculations.
