Analysis of microclimate and spatial geometry correlation of squares in cold urban settlements: A study in Urumqi

With the rapid development of contemporary cities, the environmental problems of public space in settlements are becoming more and more prominent, and the planning, design, and renovation of urban settlements are focusing more and more on the creation of a comfortable and healthy human environment in order to seek sustainable development. The study aims to explore the rational urban space geometry to improve the microclimate environment of residential squares. The study takes Urumqi, with its temperate continental climate, as an example. It uses the ENVI-met CFD simulation model to quantitatively analyze the correlation between microclimate environmental parameters and the spatial geometry of the square. The results show that ① sky view factor and side compactness have a significant effect on the thermal comfort of settlement squares in winter, with correlations of −0.57 and 0.76; open squares with openness of 0.53–0.55 are the best, followed by closed squares, and semi-open squares are the worst, which is contrary to the conclusions of the academic studies on summer in hot regions. ②Temperature was mainly affected by square area with a correlation of −0.84. Wind speed, sunshine, and humidity were mainly affected by side closeness with correlations of 0.86, 0.53, and 0.75.
