Catalytic ceramic membranes with ozonation for wastewater treatment: Preparations, mechanisms and applications

Catalytic ceramic membranes with ozonation have gained increasing attention due to their high efficiency in removing organic pollutants for water treatment. The combination of ceramic membranes and catalytic ozonation can effectively create a synergistic effect between the physical separation of ceramic membranes and the chemical reaction of catalytic ozonation, which is mainly attributed to the unique physiochemical characteristics of ceramic membranes and the strong oxidizing ability of ozone. The catalytic ceramic membrane with the utilization of ceramic membranes as carriers, accompanied by the incorporation of catalysts on the membrane surface or within the membrane pores, has been demonstrated to be effective in preventing catalyst agglomeration, increasing the number of catalytically active sites, and facilitating the efficient removal of pollutants. Thus, this technology possesses the potential to significantly reduce the contamination of ceramic membranes and prolong their operational lifespan. This paper proposes the emerging concept in the field of catalytic ceramic membranes with ozonation and provides a comprehensive review of the research progress achieved so far. It not only introduces various preparation methods of catalytic ozone ceramic membranes but also conducts a detailed study on the catalytic ozone mechanism for the first time, with a focus on heterogeneous catalytic ozonation. Additionally, this paper presents the recent progress in the application of catalytic ozonation ceramic membranes in wastewater treatment. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of catalytic ceramic membranes with ozonation are also discussed.
