The researchers — who are based at Nanjing Forestry University, the Nanjing University of Science and Technology, the Northeast Forestry University, South China Agricultural University and Scion — used a transparent wood film substrate and a conductive cellulose-based ink to fabricate flexible electronics that can be bent, folded and rolled. To make the transparent substrate, a delignification process was applied to balsa wood that removes most of the lignin from the cell walls while keeping the original honeycomb structure. The conductive ink was a mix of oxidized cellulose nanofibres and carbon nanotubes.
The team used origami principles to transform two-dimensional sheets into three-dimensional structures. A proof-of-principle motion sensor was also created that switches on and off depending on the folding states.
