Wageningen-based agbiotech KeyGene, in collaboration with Chiquita and Wageningen University, develops a banana plant resistant to both Fusarium tropical race 4 (TR4), a fungus capable of devastating entire plantations, and black sigatoka, a widespread leaf disease. The new variety, named Yelloway One, was produced by combining traditional crossbreeding techniques and modern DNA analysis technology. It will be sent to regions in the Philippines and Indonesia for field trials.
The Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein opens at the National University of Singapore, backed by a $30 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund. Focusing on regional preferences and addressing the challenges of feeding a growing global population, the center will explore microalgae and biomass fermentation, supported by complementary research into cultivated meat and plant-based technologies.
