Bismuth is vaporized by a pulsed UV laser (background) to create a plasma containing Bi anions, which are entrained into a supersonic expansion of CO2, producing [Bi(CO2)n] clusters. In their Communication (DOI: 10.1002/anie.201607445), J. M. Weber et al. show that small clusters have core ions based on BiCOO metalloformate complexes (center).
