Two substrates, tryptamine and 5-methoxytryptamine, are used in parallel by Cinchona to generate the naturally occurring mixtures of methoxy and non-methoxy Cinchona alkaloids. Discovery of the genes responsible for methoxylation allows reconstitution of biosynthetic intermediates in tobacco.
