We would like to share ideas on the publication ‘Research on the relationship between nurses' compliance with standard precautions, servant leadership and emotional exhaustion: A cross-sectional survey’ (Du et al., 2024). The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of servant leadership on nurses' emotional failure and compliance with standard precautions and to explore the moderating effect of individual resilience. The authors demonstrated that the level of servant leadership can alleviate nurses' emotional exhaustion and improve compliance with standard precautions. Especially for nurses with low personal resilience, the care and support of department leaders are needed. We are writing to express my interest and provide some insights on the significant topic of servant leadership and its impact on emotional exhaustion among otorhinolaryngology nurses. The demanding nature of nursing, particularly in specialized fields like otorhinolaryngology, often leads to significant emotional and physical strain. Emotional exhaustion, a core component of burnout, is prevalent among nurses and can severely impact their well-being, job satisfaction and quality of patient care (Du et al., 2024). Servant leadership, characterized by prioritizing the needs of subordinates, promoting their growth and fostering a supportive work environment, has been identified as a promising leadership style to address these challenges (Purwanti et al., 2023). Research suggests that servant leadership can significantly reduce emotional exhaustion and enhance job satisfaction among nurses (Du et al., 2024).
Emotional exhaustion, defined as the depletion of emotional resources due to high work stress, is a critical issue in the nursing profession (Yeh et al., 2021). It leads to reduced job performance, increased absenteeism and a higher likelihood of leaving the profession. The negative impacts of emotional exhaustion extend beyond individual nurses, affecting patient care quality and overall healthcare system efficiency. Emotional exhaustion is exacerbated by the high demands and stressful nature of nursing roles, particularly in otorhinolaryngology, where nurses deal with complex patient needs and intricate medical procedures. Servant leadership offers a potential solution to the problem of emotional exhaustion (Johnson & Rohde, 2022; Purwanti et al., 2023). By emphasizing the well-being and development of nurses, servant leaders create an environment that fosters psychological safety, support and empowerment. This leadership style involves active listening, empathy and the provision of necessary resources, which can help nurses manage stress more effectively and reduce feelings of emotional exhaustion. To effectively implement servant leadership in otorhinolaryngology nursing, healthcare organizations should focus on the following strategies: (1) Leadership training: provide training programs for nurse leaders to develop servant leadership skills. This includes training in active listening, empathy, conflict resolution and team-building. (2) Supportive work environment: Create a work environment that prioritizes the well-being and professional development of nurses. This can be achieved through regular feedback, recognition programs and opportunities for career advancement. (3) Resource provision: Ensure that nurses have access to the necessary resources, including staffing, equipment and training, to perform their duties effectively and manage work-related stress. (4) Resilience building: Incorporate resilience-building activities and programs into the workplace. This can include stress management workshops, counselling services and peer support groups.
In summary, the adoption of servant leadership in otorhinolaryngology nursing holds significant promise in reducing emotional exhaustion and enhancing job satisfaction. By fostering a supportive and empowering work environment, servant leaders can help nurses manage the stresses of their profession more effectively, ultimately leading to better patient care and improved overall healthcare outcomes. I urge healthcare organizations to consider the implementation of servant leadership as a strategic approach to address the pressing issue of emotional exhaustion among nurses.
