Lignin-containing nanocellulose/PVA blends with flame retardant and UV shielding properties

Multi-functional environmental friendly biobased materials have attracted the attention due to the serious pollution caused by petroleum-based plastics. Lignin-containing nanocellulose (LCN), sodium alginate (SA) and ammonium polyphosphates (APP) have been directly added to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to prepare flame retardant blends with excellent UV shielding properties. Compared with pure PVA, with the addition of LCN, PVA blends can almost 100 % shield the UVC, UVB and UVA light. The limiting oxygen index for combustion containing of the SA and APP increased from 18.19 % for unmodified PVA to 38.48 % (increased by 111.5 %). The burning intensity for the PVA blends is dramatically lower than that for PVA. They displayed self-extinguishing characteristics. The thermal stability from degradation of the blends was greater than that from unmodified PVA. In addition, the presume addition of SA enhanced the compatibility between APP and the PVA matrix. A green, simple and efficient way to produce biobased flame retardant materials with UV shielding ability has been demonstrated.
