Abstract:
This article examines the connections of El gran teatro del mundo with heterodox intellectual traditions that the Spanish Inquisition targeted for scrutiny or censorship. While many critics have considered El gran teatro del mundo a prominent example of Calderón de la Barca’s Catholic orthodoxy, this study ponders discursive elements that link the auto sacramental to Neoplatonic natural philosophy. Indeed, this work reveals elements that connect it to the intellectual world associated with early modern natural philosophy, such as its implicit conception of matter (magia naturalis), the divinization of space, and the anthropomorphization of the world. Close scrutiny of Calderón de la Barca’s drama reveals elements that connect it to Kabbalistic traditions, particularly the anthropomorphization of space which links with the Kabbalistic notion of Adam-Kadmon. Having explored these connections to intellectual currents outside the realm of Catholic orthodoxy, the article concludes by examining textual strategies Calderón de la Barca deployed to allay potential accusations of heresy.
