As operators and manufacturers eye the transition from 5G to 6G, spectrum availability continues to be a crucial factor in enabling faster, more reliable wireless connectivity. One key hurdle in this transition is the ever-increasing bandwidth demand due to higher performance and higher bitrates of 5G New Radio. Innovative solutions are, thus, required to optimize spectrum usage in traditional as well as new bands. We start our column by reporting on recent solutions for microwave spectrum usage for the backhaul of 5G networks as well as for fixed wireless access. Not only do these breakthroughs extend network reach and boost data transmission, but they also pave the way for a swift deployment of next-generation services. The importance of careful spectrum usage in general is further discussed as we examine the downsides of private spectrum allocations and their impact on public network performance.
