Inversion of the direction of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitted by cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) could be achieved by modulating the conjugation degree of the chiral binaphthyl dopant. Hg ion induced CPL sign inversion was achieved by using the thioacetal binaphthyl as a mercury-responsive chiral dopant in CLCs.
