N-heterocyclic carbene dimerization has been used to synthesize a sp2-carbon-conjugated covalent organic framework for the first time. Due to its unique tetraazafulvalene linkages, the resultant COF is strongly reducing, enabling stabilization of the rarely isolable tetracyanoethylene radical anion within its pores.
