Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection [1]. Though current treatment focuses on organ support and addressing the infection, the dysregulated host response is an appealing target for novel therapeutics. One promising immunomodulatory therapy already available for other indications is therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE). However, despite increasing enthusiasm for TPE, key questions must be answered before it is ready for “prime time” [2].
